The well-being of all students is a vital element of the respect and regard that everyone is called to take on. We are all members of an educational organisation that has committed itself to developing a genuine Christian community.
All staff, students and families have the personal and community responsibility to contribute in this mission by respectful and positive interactions with each other at all times. Achieving this demands that we all maintain this vision of responsibility and positivity as the basis of our attitudes, words and actions. In so doing we achieve personal growth and enhance the development of all around us, of all ages.
Education, the development of the whole person, can only occur in an environment of respect, peace and mutual understanding. The personal needs of security, safety, physical and emotional health are prerequisites to a student successfully undertaking the process of their education.
Student well-being, in ensuring that these needs are met individually and communally, is a prerequisite for successful education. The well being of our students and staff along with the provision of a leading edge education for all underpin everything we do at the School.
It is a matter of integrity, social and Christian responsibility, and also educational necessity that all the policies and practices of Casey Grammar School include the principles of student well-being. Resilience, confidence, creativity and leadership are some of the many strengths that we look to engender in our students, in addition to fostering a love of lifelong learning.
An integral part of the Student Well-being Program in the Secondary School are the Learning Curve resources in the student planner. Students and their Mentor’s meet each week to prepare our young people for a lifetime of learning and thinking.
Living - cultivating social emotional growth involving, Self Awareness, Self Control, Self Motivation, Empathy and Managing Relationships.
Learning - teaching how to learn and building an array of learning approaches, study skills and arousing curiosity and a love of learning.
Thinking - teaching how to think creatively and critically through Habits of Mind and using higher order thinking strategies and tools.
Student Well-being Program
The main objectives in the Student Well-being Program are:
- Teaching young people to learn how to learn in their best ways and how to think creatively and critically
- Developing their lifelong learning habits and dispositions to be curious
- Teaching them to know what to do when they don’t know what to do
Studies reveal strong and consistent relationships between the number of developmental assets present in young people’s lives and the degree to which they develop in positive and healthful ways. Results show that the greater the numbers of Developmental Assets are experienced by young people, the more positive and successful their development (see Developmental Assets document).
Student well-being is provided by Homeroom teacher’s classroom teachers, Mentors, Year Level Coordinators, Head of Student Well-being, Chaplain and Psychologist. We seek to provide resources for students and families to help them to deal with issues or problems which may arise in their lives.
We actively discourage harassment in any form. We ask all students to treat each other at all times with courtesy and respect. Our Anti-Bullying policy is freely available from the school.
The House System
Casey Grammar School’s House system delivers our Student Well-being Program P-12. Students are assigned to one of four Houses during their Junior and Secondary Schooling.
Houses comprise students from all age groups within each sub-school with all family members assigned to the one House. Each House is overseen by a Head of House who together with the Classroom Teacher/Student Well-being Mentor, is responsible for the holistic well-being of each student in their House, nurturing their academic, emotional, social and spiritual development. The House system forms the basis for friendly, intra-school competition for sports days and other activities.
Each House holds regular meetings where students of all ages interact. Each House elects House Captains who take on positions of responsibility within both the House and the wider School. Houses also organise community service activities and fundraising projects, involving families in many of their activities.
Opportunity - Student Leadership
Student leadership is considered to be an integral part of Casey Grammar School’s well-being and personal development programs, providing vital opportunities for personal growth.
We want our students to learn and appreciate the value of service, both to other people and to their own ideas, initiatives and projects. Our students will experience the satisfaction and reward of turning an initiative into a successful reality, of making a strong and lasting difference to their own and the lives of others at the School. It is often a challenge for young people to assert themselves, and to take a stand for what they know to be right.
Training and support is provided to all of our students to instil sound values, a strong moral compass, confidence and self-assurance. Student leadership opportunities are available across the entire school.
